A Message from Literary Events NL (LENL):
Little more than a year ago, an innocent question by author Janice Godin sparked a flame that resulted in a blaze: “Anyone interested in doing a literary tour this summer?”
Within moments, authors Candace Osmond, Janice Godin, and Carolyn R. Parsons had committed to what would become Literary Events NL, a Newfoundland-based literary organization whose main focus is on organizing and delivering a tour of Newfoundland authors through the public library system. Shortly after coming together, we three added in a fourth, Corey Majeau, a graphic designer who created the red and white iconic look of LENL.
2017 was our first year and, according to anyone who attended any of the tour stops, we hit it out of the park. Despite the speedy organization and low summer population, the tour stops were filled by eager authors within days of announcing our goal, and individual tour stops were almost all filled to capacity. Our finale, in St. John’s at the A.C. Hunter Public Library, was spectacular, and culminated with a panel led by Joel Thomas Hynes and Bill Rowe.
Indie authors and traditionally published authors were thrust together on our tour and delivered on an equal standing to the people of Newfoundland. All were equally received with open arms.
2018 will be our second year and, already, we have a full roster of amazing authors booked for eight of the nine stops along the tour. Our finale in St. John’s still has availability.
We’ve made some adjustments. The tour will take place in the fall now, to maximize attendance, and we will hold most of the stops on Saturdays for convenience. Each stop will have their own line-up as not all authors can travel to each stop. As the summer progresses into the fall, LENL will be advertising the line-ups, so keep an eye out for a library tour stop near you!
This year, with our new Not-For-Profit status, we’ve reached out to other organizations like WANL for support and opportunities to further our reach all over Newfoundland. We teamed up with WANL with what used to be their Spring Tides program to create a new and improved Fall Tides program, which WANL members can apply for.
The Fall Tides program will choose eight WANL members from those who apply to receive a grant of $187.50. This money will be used for travel and accommodations to the tour location for which you are selected.
LENL and WANL look forward to working together on the 2018 Literary Events NL Tour and hope to see your application soon!

Visiting Author Series
The Writers’ Alliance Visiting Author Series features out-of-province writers, offering local writers and the general public the opportunity to meet and network with other established Canadian authors. These readings are held in St. John’s, Corner Brook in partnership with the English Program at Grenfell Campus. The WANL Reading Committee selects notable local authors who in turn each invite an author of interest from another part of Canada. The Visiting Author Series is supported by funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, Literary Readings Program.
Last year we were delighted to host Tracey Lindberg and Anakana Schofield.
