This year’s prizes and readings were presented in partnership with Association for the Arts Mount Pearl and Admiralty House Communications Museum and recorded with our go-to filmmaker (and WANL’s 2020 Volunteer of the Year) Mike Hickey. 🤝

A Nightmare on George Street 2021: Prizes, Sponsors, and Jury Announced!
The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador is so excited to share an update with you regarding our 2021 A Nightmare on George Street (ANOGS) writing contest! (Scroll for submission details!)
WANL has partnered with Admiralty House Communications Museum and the Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl for this event, and we are ecstatic to work with these local organizations (now + in the future too!)
“The Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl (AAMP) is thrilled to partner with the Writers’ Alliance and to celebrate the literary arts in our province through WANL’s annual Halloween Writing event,” AAMP’s Chair Christine Hennebury shared.
With AAMP’s support, we have been able to offer even bigger prizes for this year’s contest… in the form of

A Nightmare on George Street 2021: Call for Submissions!
Just like we have in previous years, we’re asking local writers “to put the quill to the quire, crafting up a spooky tale that would make HP Lovecraft have nightmares!”
As evidenced by the chilling submissions we received in 2018, 2019, and 2020, there’s not only a lot of talent in the local writing community – there’s so much imagination and creativity bursting forth from your admittedly somewhat scary brains!

Contest Details:
Contestants are welcome to submit flash fiction original material of any genre to a maximum of 1,000 words. Writing format is open to all: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, monologues, etc.
*Please ensure your entry DOES NOT feature your name or any other identifying markers, as all entries will be assigned a number and sent to a jury to deliberate.*
Submissions can be emailed to info@wanl.ca.
The deadline for submissions is September 21, 2021 at midnight.
What Happens Next:
An educated and professional jury of writers, actors, and horror fanatics will adjudicate the submissions, creating a shortlist of the top five entries.
The winners will then be chosen by the public via online voting.
Our five longlisted authors will be asked to record readings of their submissions, to be shared on social media. Our go-to guy for all things spooky and altogether kooky, Mike Hickey, will be editing these filmed readings to create nightmare fuel!
As a bonus prize, the top five authors will receive an MP4 copy of their filmed reading that can be used for promotion on their own personal social media platforms.
With respect to the Covid-19 pandemic, and WANL’s commitment to offer more programming and services to Members outside of the St. John’s Metro region by offering more online opportunities, this eerie event will once again take place virtually, giving opportunities for writers outside the Avalon (and those outside of the province!) to participate in this writing contest.
