The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador has teamed up with the legendary The Newfoundland Herald once again for our 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Writing Contest!

To celebrate the beloved Irish holiday, we are asking writers to create an original limerick. As part of this partnership with the long-running magazine, our top St. Paddy’s day charmers will have their submissions PUBLISHED in the St. Patrick’s Day edition of The Newfoundland Herald!
What is a limerick?
Limericks are five-line poems that follow a specific rhyme structure of AABBA.
The first, second, and fifth line rhyme with each other, while the third and fourth line rhyme with each other.
The first, second, and fifth lines typically have about 7-10 syllables, with the shorter third and fourth line typically boasting about 5-7 syllables.
What is the theme?
Limericks are typically humorous and tell a short story.
With The Herald being Newfoundland-based and circulated province-wide, regional content and humour is encouraged.
CONTEST DETAILS:
Open to all writers of all backgrounds, skill level, age, etc.
The Writers’ Alliance will be accepting submissions until 12:00 a.m., Newfoundland Standard Time, on Monday, March 2.
EDIT 02/22: You can submit more than one limerick!
SUBMISSION DETAILS:
When submitting your limericks, authors should include a 50-word biography, as well as a photo of themselves to accompany their submission, should it go to print.
Please note that not all submissions will be printed due to space constraints in The Newfoundland Herald magazine.
