Engl 3901. Introduction to Creative Writing: Poetry

Monday evenings, 7-930, rm. aa3033, in the Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue.

English 3901 introduces students to the craft of poetry through reading, analysis, observation, workshopping, and both in-class and take-home poetry writing exercises. We will ask what makes poetry unique among the literary genres, and explore how poetry’s vitality, urgency, and (sometimes) clarity can help us make sense of the challenging times in which we live. Admission is limited and portfolio-based; portfolios should include 5-10 pages of writing in any genre, plus a short statement of your writing interests, themes, goals, etc.
Portfolios are due in by August 7 to andreae.callanan@mun.ca  The course will be led by Andreae Callanan.

Engl 4920. Introduction to Creative Writing: Screenwriting
Tuesday evenings, 7-930, rm. aa3033, in the Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue.

This intensive workshop will focus on story architecture and scriptwriting, with the goal of moving students from concept to the first draft by the end of the semester, while comparing ways of thinking about craft and looking at select examples. Admission to the course is by way of a short writing portfolio which should include either 5-10 pages of a script, OR a 5-page treatment, OR 5 pages of fiction. Please also include a half-page bio of your writing experience thus far.
