What’s All That NOISE? – A Live Storytelling Competition
A Part of the Sparkles Literary Event Series

What will NOISE sound like?

A child laughing, the screech of a 10-car pileup, voices of angels, a refrigerator hum, whispered wedding vows.… Have you ever heard a noise that changed your life? What is the sweetest sound you’ve ever heard?

Storytellers from across the province will tell the most moving, funny, poignant and true stories live – all surrounding the theme of noise. The seven-minute stories will be delivered with no scripts and no notes – just the storyteller’s voice and a microphone!

The stories will be fuelled by the energy of the audience, who will feel the carnival thrill of stories that are funny, dead serious, sad, or unexpected… the options are limitless! The only criterion is that they riff on the theme of NOISE. The event will explore what makes a good, noisy story and award the audience and listeners at home with the electricity and buzz of a live event. Stories will be recorded and become part of a storytelling podcast!

How to get involved:

If you are interested in telling your story on stage – with no notes or script – but straight from the heart, please send a 250-word outline of your tale, focusing on the theme of NOISE to: sparksstorytelling7@gmail.com by April 25, 2022.

The live event is on May 15, 2022 at the Ship Pub. If your story is chosen, you must be available to perform it on May 15 at 7:30 p.m.!

A panel of four judges will choose a magnificent group of storytellers who will each be paid $200.00 to tell a seven-minute story on stage.

Inspiration for What’s All That Noise?

Inspired by the popular storytelling series The Moth; What’s All That Noise? will celebrate Canadian stories.
The live show will recreate the atmosphere of the hustle and bustle of a live event, one that surrounds the dearly missed noise of a crowd… the kind of storytelling that happens naturally at a dinner party, at the cabin, or in a well-loved pub on Duckworth Street!

The podcast that results will feature the best stories of the night and introduce the storytellers, celebrating local writers and the return of live literary events.
Listeners will laugh and cry as they bear witness to the stories that define our diverse journeys and changing times. The truth-telling will deepen our understanding of each other and strengthen the ties that bind us together.

Meet your hosts!

Lisa Moore

Lisa Moore has written three collections of short stories, Degrees of Nakedness, Open, and Something for Everyone, and four novels, Alligator, February, Caught, This Is How We Love and a young adult novel, Flannery. She is the editor of three short story anthologies: Us, Now and Racket, as well as the forthcoming Hard Ticket. She has worked with co-librettist Laura Kaminsky to adapt her novel February for opera, to be produced by Opera on the Avalon. Lisa is the winner of 2019 Thomas Raddall Fiction Prize and the Alistair MacLeod Prize for short stories. Lisa’s work has been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Dutch, and German. She teaches Creative Writing in the English Department at Memorial University.

Angela Antle

Angela Antle is a MUN Interdisciplinary PhD student, writer and audio and documentary producer. At CBC, she mentored producers to create award-winning narrative radio documentaries for Atlantic Voice and at MUN, she’s taught Creative Writing 7205: Podcasting. For her own PhD research, she is developing a speculative, research-creation project exploring climate change on Atlantic islands using podcasting as a method. Antle wrote and directed the CBC-TV documentary “Gander’s Ripple Effect: How a Small Town’s Kindness Opened on Broadway” and she wrote the feature-length documentary “Atlantic” which won best documentary laurels at the Dublin, Chagrin, Nickel and Wexford Film Festivals and screened worldwide; including at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival.
