Write a new ending for your favourite public domain story.
• What if Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol did not learn from his mistakes?
• What if Romeo and Juliet had been able to pursue a normal teenage relationship without pressure from their families?
• What if Wendy Darling had chosen to stay in Neverland with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys?
• What if Captain Ahab had survived his vengeful hunt for Moby Dick?
Other notable public domain works include: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Three Musketeers, Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and many, many more!
The prizes are:

🥈 2nd place: $100
🥉 3rd place: $75
🏅 Runner Up x2: $50 each
This writing contest is open to all WritersNL Youth members (ages 30 and under) in good standing.
What is “public domain”? Stanford University explains:
“The term “public domain” refers to creative materials that are not protected by intellectual property laws such as copyright, trademark, or patent laws.
The public owns these works, not an individual author or artist.
Anyone can use a public domain work without obtaining permission, but no one can ever own it.”
Is your selected story is in the public domain?
Look up your selected works via Project Gutenberg to confirm.
Project Gutenberg’s goal is to put public domain works into easily accessible and free ebook format – Fun fact: the founder created the first ever ebook!
This online library of free eBooks currently has over 70,000 ebooks in its collection, with options to search and browse the collection using filters like date, popularity, category, and more.

Submission Guidelines:
1) Write a short summary of your selected public domain story for context, and then create your new ending. Submissions can range from a minimum of 500 to a maximum of 1,000 words.
2) Ensure there are no identifying markers on your submission such as your name, contact info, etc., to ensure blind judging.
3) Submit your work to WritersNL via email in a .doc file format. Send submissions to info@writersnl.ca using the subject line “Fan Fiction Youth Contest.”
NOTE: Any submissions based on works that are NOT in the public domain are immediately ineligible.
