DEADLINE: “Writing in the Time of Covid” – A Year in Review

A paid opportunity to share your experience with one very long year

It seemed so far away, but we finally made it to 2021! In a blink, now we’re already almost in March.
As of mid-March, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have now lived through a full twelve months since the Covid-19 pandemic began shutting down most Newfoundland and Labrador this time last year.

For many of us, these past twelve months have been unlike any other year in recent history or memory.
We’ve all had to adapt to a “new norm.” We left our office building (and office pals!) and set up shop at home. Events of all kinds quickly went virtual, from orchestras to birthday parties, and we tuned in on Zoom to participate. We fully embraced and maintained our bubbles – buddy, family, and then Atlantic. We practiced social distancing, wore our masks, and washed our hands endlessly. In looking back on this weird and wild year, WANL is asking you to write a piece that focuses on how the pandemic has impacted you and your writing

This is an opportunity to share your experiences about how you made it though these strange, tumultuous times. We’re looking for inspirational stories that will demonstrate the indomitable driving force that compels our writers to push forward, no matter the circumstances.

Applicants are asked to submit a recorded video featuring a reading focused on this past year. This writing prompt is purposefully broad, leaving applicants with ample room for creativity and exploration.

Please note: Members will be responsible for recording and submitting their own readings, to be shot at the highest resolution possible, in landscape mode, in a well-lit and quiet environment. Videos should be submitted in an mp4 format. Readings should be approximately 7-10 minutes each, with a minimum of 7 minutes.

Applicants who are unable to read are welcome to submit their video with a reader provided by the applicant. The jury will be evaluating readings on the content of the submission and the presentation. Successful applicants will receive the full payment. We encourage any successful applicants to pay your reader for their time, however, this is at the discretion of the applicant.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these virtual/pandemic times.

This is a paid opportunity.
OPEN TO WANL MEMBERS ONLY.
WANL will be selecting THREE readings to be premiered.
Selected readers will be paid $150.00 each for their contribution.

How to Apply: Send along your themed submission in an mp4 file to info@wanl.ca to be considered.

Deadline: Wednesday, March 10 at midnight
