Youth Workshop – Build Your Own Adventure with novelist Caighlan Smith!
Please note: Registration closes on March 5 at 6 p.m.

Where will your adventure take you – rather, where will you take your adventure?

This workshop, for youths aged 12+, guides writers through the creation of their own adventure story, loosely following Joseph Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey.

Writers will participate in discussions and group brainstorming about heroes and adventure tropes, while piece by piece assembling their own journey for their own hero.

The workshop illustrates the hero development mechanics of a well-structured adventure story, so that writers come away not just with adventure narrative-building tools but with ample character development tools and tricks.

Fantasy, Science Fiction, and all genre fiction fans are welcome!

Registrants are encouraged to submit any questions they would like to have answered by Caighlan to info@wanl.ca.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS OPEN TO WANL MEMBERS ONLY.

Caighlan Smith is an internationally award-winning novelist currently working on a PhD in English literature at Memorial University of Newfoundland. A MUN alumni with a B.A. (Hons.) in English, as well as a University of Glasgow alumni with an MLitt in Fantasy, Smith’s young adult fantasy novel, Children of Icarus, won the Scottish Teenage Book Prize 2018. Smith’s supernatural and sci-fi stories have been published on Tor.com, and her latest short fiction, “Monocarpic,” was published in the Winter 2020 Issue of Queen’s Quarterly. Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Smith spends most of her free time reading, gaming, and trying to find things in the messy terrain that has inexplicably overwhelmed her desk. Her first novel, Hallow Hour, was traditionally published when she was nineteen.
