ANNOUNCING THE 2020 NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR CREDIT UNION FRESH FISH AWARD(February 19, 2020 – St. John’s, NL) The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL) is pleased to announce the call for submissions for one of the country’s most lucrative literary awards for unpublished writers: Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers. The Award, generously sponsored by Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union, is intended to serve as an incentive for emerging writers in the province by providing them with financial support, recognition, and professional editing services for a book-length manuscript in any genre.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is home to an immense amount of creative talent and we are honoured to support a literary program that cultivates emerging artists and provides them with the tools to prosper,” Allison Chaytor-Loveys, Chief Executive Officer of NLCU shared.

“We continue to sponsor Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union Fresh Fish Award because we recognize that there is a rich history of storytelling in our province and we want to encourage those who keep this tradition alive.”

Since the inaugural year of the Fresh Fish Award in 2006, several careers have been launched and 13 manuscripts have been published from among the 22 winning and shortlisted Fresh Fish writers.

“The Fresh Fish deadline was a driving force to get my poetry collection into shape,” 2017 winner Matthew Hollett said of the award.

“I’d been working on my book Optic Nerve for years, including through WANL’s wonderful mentorship program. I was so honoured to be shortlisted for the Fresh Fish with super talented writers Terry Doyle and Liz Solo. When my book won, it was the first time for a poetry collection, which felt special. The award certainly opened a few doors, and I published my first nonfiction book in 2018. My poetry collection has also since been accepted for publication,” he shared.

“The Fresh Fish really feels like the start of my professional writing practice, and I’ll always be very grateful to have been part of it!”
