DEADLINE: Call for Submissions: Indie Author Readings!

February 22, 2021

Thanks to the Arts in the Time of Covid fund from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, WANL is ecstatic to announce more calls for submissions for paid opportunities. This is part of our Winter and Spring 2021 events roster that will put money directly into authors’ pockets via workshops, masterclasses, Ask Me Anything experiences, readings, contests, and more!

Have you self-published a book between January 1, 2016 and now?
Is your book still available for purchase, locally or digitally?
If so, you’re eligible to apply to our 2021 Indie Author Readings Event!

This is a unique chance to plug your work and reach a potentially new audience of book lovers and avid readers through WANL’s social media channels.
If an advertising opportunity in which the advertiser gets paid sounds too good to be true, keep reading – WANL wants to reward self-published authors of all genres for their (surely ongoing) hard work, perseverance, and immense dedication to their craft!

This is a paid opportunity. OPEN TO WANL MEMBERS ONLY.
WANL will be selecting three readings to be premiered.
Selected readers will be paid $150 each for their contribution.

How to apply:

1) Select an excerpt from one of your self-published books.
We recommend selecting a scene that will grab the audience’s attention and leave them wanting more, enticing them to seek out not only the novel you’re reading from, but maybe your entire catalogue of work!

2) Record yourself reading your excerpt.
Please introduce yourself, being sure to name the title of the book you are reading from. Authors may give the audience 1-3 sentences of the plotline for context – This will count towards overall video time restrictions.

3) Submit your recording to WANL staff.
WANL Staff will forward your submissions to a panel of qualified jurors, who will decide which readings will be premiered on the WANL Facebook page. The authors of the selected works will receive financial compensation. Only successful applicants will be contacted.

Submission Requirements: Applicants are responsible for recording and submitting their own readings. Readings should be approximately 7-10 minutes each, with a minimum of 7 minutes. Videos should be recorded in a well-lit and quiet environment, at the highest resolution possible, in landscape mode (horizontally). Please submit your video in mp4 format.

As always, applicants who are unable to read are welcome to submit their video with a reader provided by the applicant. The jury will be evaluating readings on the content of the submission and the presentation.
Successful applicants will receive the full payment. We encourage any successful applicants to pay your reader for their time, however, this is at the discretion of the applicant.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these virtual/pandemic times.

Send your submission in an mp4 file to info@wanl.ca.
Deadline: February 22, 2021 at midnight.
