CALL for Applications: “Writing on & In The Circus: A Workshop”

August 12, 2022

The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland & Labrador & St. John’s International CircusFest Presents:

Open Call for Applications: “Writing on & In The Circus: A Workshop”

Are you a WANL member interested in discovering more about and applying for the opportunity to participate in a 2-day writing workshop, organized in partnership with St. John’s International CircusFest?

The workshop will investigate writing disciplines and mediums around the circus, including; creative writing, academic writing, circus criticism, circus journalism, covering circus via social media, marketing writing, and more.

Participants will:
– attend a circus show together titled “Raven” (by Still Hungry productions)
– conduct a short group interview with an artist/creator from the show
– participate in writing exercises, group sharing and/or critique partnering
– make optional plans for future publication of our completed collective interviews/reviews/creative essays.

This 2-day workshop was designed to encourage the development of literacy in circus arts writing and to increase journalistic coverage of circus.

By offering complimentary spaces to WANL members in this writing exchange (which is also open to St. John’s Circus Fest participants), we hope to facilitate a genuine inter-disciplinary connection with writers, artists, and performers, and to create opportunities for cross-pollination in the art fields.
In doing so, we also aim to explore a critical discourse around the circus arts through short exercises in writing and group discussion.

The workshop is open to emerging and established writers as well as to circus artists and circus lovers. Participants are invited to take part in exploring creative writing and journalistic coverage around circus topics by discussing, writing about and viewing circus. All WANL members are encouraged to apply and applications will be considered on a first come first serve basis for a limited number of spots.

The Writing On & In Circus workshop will be facilitated by Kim Campbell (they/them). (Read more about Kim Campbell below!)
