Call for Submissions: Themed Readings to celebrate International Women’s Day 2021!

February 16, 2021 at 10:30 a.m.

This year, to mark International Women’s Day on March 8, 2021, WANL is asking you to write a piece that focuses on women (and women-identifying folx) and their role, contributions, and meaning in your life.

This is a paid opportunity, open to WANL Members only.

WANL will be selecting THREE readings to be premiered.
Selected readers will be paid $150.00 each for their contribution.

We’d like you to think about…
The women who inspire you.
The women who helped you feel like or act like a better person.
The women we look up to as role models.
The women in your family. The women at your workplace.
The women who survived and the women we’ve lost.
The women who smashed the glass ceiling and kept reaching farther.
The women who smashed the patriarchy and refused to be silenced.
The LGBTQ women, Indigenous women, and BIPOC women fighting for equality.
The women who improved the lives of their fellow women, through advocacy, invention, ingenuity and bravery.

And we want you to invoke their strong spirits in your writing!
Applicants are asked to submit a recorded video featuring a reading of an original piece that focuses on women in some way. This writing prompt is purposefully generic, leaving applicants with ample room for creativity and exploration.

Please note: Members will be responsible for recording and submitting their own readings, to be shot at the highest resolution possible, in landscape mode, in a well-lit and quiet environment. Videos should be submitted in an mp4 format. Readings should be approximately 7-10 minutes each, with a minimum of 7 minutes.

Applicants who are unable to read are welcome to submit their video with a reader provided by the applicant. The jury will be evaluating readings on the content of the submission and the presentation. Successful applicants will receive the full payment. We encourage any successful applicants to pay your reader for their time, however, this is at the discretion of the applicant.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these virtual/pandemic times.

How to Apply: Send along your themed submission in an mp4 file to info@wanl.ca to be considered.

Deadline:  Monday, March 1, 2021 at midnight

Videos will be premiered on the WANL Facebook Page at 7 p.m. on International Women’s Day on March 8.
