What is the Arts & Letters Awards Program?

• The Arts & Letters Awards Program was established in 1952 to support and celebrate cultural activities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
• Today, the program offers 62 awards for original creative work in literature, music, visual art, and digital multimedia.

Objectives:
• To encourage the creation of new works of art by both professional and non-professional artists of all ages.
• To recognize artistic excellence by offering cash awards and the opportunity to exhibit winning and selected works at The Rooms.

Who can enter?
ANY resident of Newfoundland and Labrador of ANY age can enter.

How does the program work?
• Entries in literature, music, visual arts, and digital multimedia are submitted to the Arts and Letters Awards by email in digital format.
• There are three age groups: ages 15 & under, ages 15-20, and age 21 & over.
• Judges select winners and provide written comments on entries.
• Winners receive a cash award and the invitation to be part of a group exhibition at The Rooms.

Percy Janes First Novel Award
• This award honours the life and work of one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most distinguished writers, Percy Maxwell Janes, by awarding a cash award for an unpublished novel.
• Writers must be at least 19 years of age.
• Unpublished novels must be 30,000 to 100,000 in word length.
• Writers who have already published a work of fiction are NOT eligible to enter.
• A judge selects one winner and provides written comments on all entries.

     Dramatic Script two awards of $1,000
     Percy Janes Award one award of $2,500
French Literary one award of $1,000 one award of $350
Music four awards of $1,000 15 years & under:    two awards of $350
16-20 years:              two awards of $350
Visual Arts twelve awards of $1,000 15 years & under:    four awards of $350
16-20 years:              four awards of $350
Digital Multimedia one award of $1,000 one award of $350
