Call for Submissions: Youth Readings!

Are you a writer under 30 years old?
Are you a member of WANL?
If so, you’re eligible to apply for The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Youth Author Readings!

(February 16, 2021) – We are asking our Youth Members to write a letter to their past selves – before the Covid-19 pandemic changed the world as we know it.
What do you know now that you wish you knew then?

Maybe you would have spent more time with friends and family.
Or maybe you would have spent more time alone, getting used to being alone.
Maybe you would have attended that school dance.
Maybe you would have enrolled in that extra MUN course.
Or maybe you would have taken on a remote learning course before it was the only option.
Maybe you would have volunteered at the pet shelter you follow on Facebook.
Maybe you would have finally got that dog you’ve been wanting for years.
Maybe, maybe, maybe…

There’s a lot of maybe’s – and there may be a valuable lesson within.
This is a paid opportunity. Open to WANL Members only.
WANL will be selecting three readings to be premiered.
Selected readers will be paid $150 each for their contribution.

Thanks to the Arts in the Time of Covid fund from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, WANL is ecstatic to announce more calls for submissions for paid opportunities. This is part of our Winter and Spring 2021 events roster that will put money directly into authors’ pockets via workshops, masterclasses, Ask Me Anything experiences, readings, contests, and more!

How to apply:

1) Write an original scene that adheres to the above writing prompt.
We want you to write to your 2019 self, and give yourself a dose of the knowledge and expertise you’ve gained since the pandemic began in March 2020.

2) Record yourself reading your excerpt.
Please introduce yourself, and give us a brief idea of what you’re up to these days, and what you were doing before the Covid-19 pandemic.

3) Submit your recording to WANL staff.
WANL Staff will forward your submissions to a panel of qualified jurors, who will decide which readings will be premiered on the WANL Facebook page. The authors of the selected works will receive financial compensation. Only successful applicants will be contacted.

Submission Requirements: Applicants are responsible for recording and submitting their own readings. Readings should be approximately 7-10 minutes each, with a minimum of 7 minutes. Videos should be recorded in a well-lit and quiet environment, at the highest resolution possible, in landscape mode (horizontally). Please submit your video in mp4 format.

Applicants who are unable to read are welcome to submit their video with a reader provided by the applicant. The jury will be evaluating readings on the content of the submission and the presentation. Successful applicants will receive the full payment. We encourage any successful applicants to pay your reader for their time, however, this is at the discretion of the applicant.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these virtual/pandemic times.

Send your submission in an mp4 file to info@wanl.ca.

Deadline: Friday, March 12 at midnight.

ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS IMMEDIATELY. PLEASE APPLY ASAP.
