Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union Fresh Fish Award

Awarded every other year, the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union Fresh Fish Award is one of the most generous prizes in Canada given to an emerging writer who has not yet published a book. The Fresh Fish Award serves as an incentive for emerging writers in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing them with financial support, recognition, and professional editing services for a book-length manuscript in any genre.

Thanks to the generous support of the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union, the winner receives a cash prize of $5,000, plus the services of a professional editor. The runners-up each receive a cash prize of $1,000.

The Fresh Fish Award was established in 2006 by author Brian O’Dea. It has been sponsored in the past by Brian O’Dea and by John and Jan O’Dea in memory of Agnes O’Dea, the province’s quintessential bibliographer.

In 2011, the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union became the award’s official corporate sponsor.
