The Work Work Work of Art: Poetry as Work/Play with Mark Callanan
Sunday, November 30
“The wolf at the door
and the wolf in the forest and the work
work work of art. The scrape,
the chop, the saw tooth
tasting maple. The cradle, the cup, the muscle
in your mother’s arm and back
and pelvis […]”
-Don McKay, from “Early Instruments” (Apparatus, 1997)
City of St. John’s Poet Laureate Mark Callanan will guide participants in this workshop through the process of creating documentary poems inspired by a variety of primary sources that highlight aspects of work and/or play in our province’s history. Though the intention of this workshop is primarily generative (to create new work using the Centre’s historical prompts), there will also be an opportunity to present work undertaken during the workshop to the rest of the group.
