Richard Greene

Richard Greene is an internationally acclaimed poet and biographer. He won the Governor General’s Literary Award for his poetry collection Boxing the Compass. He has won the National Magazine Award for Poetry and been shortlisted for that award on three other occasions. His works have appeared in many anthologies, including three volumes of Best Canadian Poetry. His collection Cannibal Rats was released in early 2026, and it contains a long poem dedicated to his journeys by road through the United States in the age of MAGA. This work has been enthusiastically reviewed, with one critic speaking of his mode as “Atlantic Gothic.” He has also written major biographies of the British poet Edith Sitwell and the novelist Graham Greene. These works were reviewed admiringly in most major publications in the English-speaking world. He was born in St. John’s, where he maintains a home. He was educated at Memorial University and Oxford University. Since 1995, he has taught English literature and creative writing at the University of Toronto.
